Pray that God would open their hearts to believe the Gospel. Pray that God would open their spiritual eyes and remove spiritual blindness so they can believe the Gospel. Pray that all deception (personal belief systems, philosophies, or logic that contradicts God’s word) will be overcome. Sometimes you feel frustrated because you have been praying for so long for a non-believing loved one to return to the fold. But keep on praying. I am sure you have heard many stories that would give you hope. In this blog we would like to give you reasons to keep believing and encourage you to continue your prayers for the non-believer.
Our Savior Wants Us To Pray
We should be praying for the unsaved. Our Savior came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10), and a principal theme of Luke’s gospel is Christ’s compassion for those often regarded as outcasts in Israel. Our Savior “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4), so when we pray for the salvation of an unsaved person, we are simply sharing in the stated desire of Jesus.
According To Scripture, Satan Wants To Keep The Nonbeliever In Spiritual Darkness
We find from the Bible that Satan has often approached people in disguise. For example, in the Garden of Eden he came in the form of a serpent to Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). Paul warned the Corinthians that he appears as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Satan wants to discourage you, and to persuade you to believe that there is no hope for your loved one. Do not give Satan that power. Keep praying for your nonbeliever.
Remember That God Loves Your Loved One More Than You Do
The love described in John 3:16 is an indiscriminate love that consists as a bona fide offer of his Son to every person for their receiving. One of the greatest concerns—and heartaches—for many Christians is with the members of their families who have not come to faith in Christ, or who perhaps have abandoned the faith they grew up with. Don’t doubt that the Lord is gracious and desires people to be saved. Pray on for their salvation, trusting in what God has said about himself, and aligning your desires with his. So, there are numerous places where God’s universal love is spoken of, so it is not wrong to say to your loved one, “God loves you.”
God Sometimes Takes His Time
It can be easy, especially after a long time of seeing no apparent change of heart in those we are praying for, to begin to doubt that God really cares about them and that our prayers will never bear fruit. But we need to remind ourselves of the truth revealed in the gospel, that our God loves to save! Just remember God’s timing is always perfect and forget about any perceived delay when He does indeed answer our long-term prayers.
Our Job Is To Trust God
“Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matt 9:36–38). This same passionate desire is evident in the apostle Paul’s prayers for his own loved ones and fellow Jews: “My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.” (Rom. 10:1). God may well be working in your loved one, even though you do not recognize it.
Pray That You Can Speak Gospel Truth To Your Nonbeliever
Often those to whom we are the closest are the hardest for us to engage in an open discussion about the gospel. There are many reasons for this, not least the complexity of balancing the respect and the responsibilities which intergenerational relationships bring. But those who are very close to us know us very well, and we can’t hide from them; the credo we want to share with them will be constantly evaluated with the character we show them. So, we need to pray for grace to display real, attractive, Christ-like, wholesome lives—lived truth which speaks volumes about the gospel we believe, alongside the spoken truth we hope also to share with them.
Keep trusting and praying for your loved ones. Say a prayer for them today and let us know how the church family might also pray for you and your loved ones.
