The book of Genesis is the story of the creation of the world and everything in it. In Genesis 1-2, we read how God, in all of his wonder and glory, created the entire world and then created humankind. God created humans differently from the rest of creation. The Scriptures tell us that God created the heavens and the earth, the waters, and the land, and then created humans separately from and to rule over all of creation. Verse 26 tells us that we are created by God in God’s image and are to reflect that image in all we do. No other part of creation, including the beasts of the field, birds of the sky, and fish in the sea, were created like humans. God endowed each of us with certain faculties, responsibilities, abilities, and gifts.
The Wonder Of Our Creation
When you encounter God’s creation, you experience the wonder and magnificence of God. Psalm 139:14 says, “Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” The fact that God made us is marvelous indeed. He fashioned us in His image and all we can do is wonder at his creation. Even Job spoke of something special about God’s making him, evidenced by his speaking of the creation as he wondered why God was allowing such tragedy to his life.
Job 10:8-12
‘Your hands fashioned and made me altogether,
And would You destroy me?
‘Remember now, that You have made me as clay;
And would You turn me into dust again?
‘Did You not pour me out like milk
And curdle me like cheese;
Clothe me with skin and flesh,
And knit me together with bones and sinews?
‘You have granted me life and loving kindness;
And Your care has preserved my spirit.
When We Face Difficult Times, How Are We To Respond?
As strange as it may sound, learning to praise God during our difficult times can give us peace, and hope and invites God right into the situation we are facing. In Psalm 34:1, The Psalmist said, I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Praise is always a choice. Even in difficult times, we can choose to praise God. You can choose to allow fear and worry to control your heart and mind, or you can choose to praise the Lord and confess that He is in control. Lifting our voices amid difficult times is not always easy, but it is a choice.
Help Me Trust You Even When It Feels Like You Are Breaking This Vessel
Job had been serving God faithfully when he got the message that all of his livestock and children were killed in a single day. Everything he had was taken from him. Immediately upon hearing the message, Job fell down in worship to God and praised God anyways. Job had the mindset that he came into this world with nothing and that all he had was given to him by God. God gave it to him, and He can take it away. Either way, God was to be praised. He trusted God’s decisions.
The central message of the book of Job is implied Chapter 28 in the hymn to wisdom. Job concludes that wisdom belongs to God, and all human attempts to grasp it or contain it are doomed to failure. This is Job’s confession and then ultimately his salvation. The point is that God’s world is very good, but it’s not perfect, or always safe. It has order and beauty, but it’s also wild and sometimes dangerous. But Job teaches us to trust God’s wisdom when we encounter suffering rather than trying to figure out the “reasons” for it.
