Grace is God’s “unmerited” favor, or where God shows goodness toward those who have no reason to expect it and may not deserve it. Mercy is a kindness or compassion that we show towards others, even ones who have offended us, because that’s how God treats us. We all know children are not always easy. They have meltdowns and struggles and sometimes are messy. But they are a huge blessing. The bible states in several instances the love of children… Proverb 17:6 Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children. Matthew 18:10 The Parable of the Wandering Sheep “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”
Our Mission Starts with the Children in Our Home
Teaching children and raising children can cause you to get frustrated. We are all busy, schedules get disrupted, meltdowns occur at inconvenient times and plans rarely go as expected. Just remember children should not be a disruption to our work; they are our mission and part of the Great Commission and that starts with our family. Loving others requires sacrifice on our part and a great amount of grace.
Empowering Children With Better Emotional Skills
Kids struggle with emotions, their brains are still under construction. Children do not usually reach the area of reason until about the age of seven. Around the age of seven, give or take a year, children enter a developmental phase known as the age of reason. “The age of reason refers to the developmental cognitive, emotional, and moral stage in which children become more capable of rational thought, have internalized a conscience, and have better capacity to control impulses (than in previous stages). It’s the time when a child starts to truly grasp the difference between right and wrong, and begins to realize that other people have their own feelings that might not match his or hers. Children do not develop the ability to think more abstractly until the later middle school to early high school years. Abstract information can be confusing to them. Children should not be chastised for their developmental stage or lack of understanding. They may not be able to communicate feelings or solve conflict fully.
The Best Way for a Child to Learn
Children and teenagers learn by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting and asking questions. Being interested, motivated and engaged in learning is important for children once they start school. It can also help if they understand why they’re learning something. Kids have so many things to learn from the ABC’s to Algebra. From toilet training to rules and regulation in your home and at school. They are bound to mess up and need redirection sometimes.
Respond to Your Child’s Big Feelings
Ordinary experiences are new to children. Adults have had life experiences and usually know what works and doesn’t work. Many experiences such as heartache, grief, severed relationships, bullies’ and mean teachers have been experiences we have lived through but they are new to children. As parents and teachers, one of our greatest motivations is to protect children from pain and suffering—in essence, from negative emotions. Nonetheless, despite our best efforts, our children will be disappointed, feel fear and pain, and have tremendous loss and grief. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Experiencing emotions is at the heart of what it means to be alive, and emotions can provide us with information about ourselves and our environment.
Proverb 22:6 Direct Your Children Onto the Right Path, and When they Are Older, They Will Not Leave It
Scripture is clear that children seem to possess a level of innocence. It is a mystery at what age a child fully grasps that sin exists and has the understanding of right vs. wrong. As a parent or a minister it is our job to teach and train them in the way of the Lord’s instruction. This helps us to discipline and give grace accordingly. If these lessons are learned through the Spirit, taught under the strong influence of a strong testimony of the atonement of the Savior, they are taught and learned in an atmosphere of love and trust that goes a long way in ensuring they will be retained.
When we teach an eternal truth to our children we will be giving the power of an example of the greatest teacher the world has ever known. The belief, and finally conviction, that Jesus of Nazareth, the carpenter’s son, the Redeemer of Israel – even our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ – gave His life in a selfless sacrifice so that we may have immortality and eternal life bring into focus every other teaching that we impart to our children and others for whom we have a stewardship.
